During the last few weeks of the year, instead of spending time regretting what I didn’t get done, I spend time thinking about and then choosing the one word I’ll use for my theme/motivation during the coming New Year. Resolutions just don’t work for me. How about you?
I started doing this in 2014. My word for that year was “ACTION”. I chose this word because in 2013 I spent too much of my time creating ideas and not enough time implementing them. If I showed you the box of notes, notebooks, napkins and other “written on” items, you would see my point.
Choosing that word and writing it on any and everything I created this year motivated me to take baby steps toward my goals. Tiny small actions turned into bigger ones as the year went on. I accomplished several key goals that year that had been on my “to-do” list for years. While I was reflecting my how good I felt about my accomplishments, I started thinking about other words that invoke action or movement and of course, another GREAT idea was born!
So, in anticipation of 2015 and all the great things I wanted to do, I chose my word of the year (SIMPLIFY) but I also created an additional list of words. This list of words would be ones that I could focus on and apply in my everyday life. The words would serve as motivators to “move me” and “shake me” to DO SOMETHING in specific areas of my life. To keep my spirit fed, I looked each word up in scripture and also applied the principles taught in those verses to areas where I needed to take action. Out of this, the Action21 program was born.
Here’s why this works…
We were not created to sit and wait for success to come to us. Jesus gave the Great Commission by saying, “GO”; he didn’t say “WAIT”.
We ALL (yes, that means you too) have been given unique DNA. You know…that genetic coding that makes each of us different than the person next to us. (We ARE fearfully and wonderfully made.)
But here’s my twist. I like to think of DNA as Divine Natural Abilities…talents and gifts given to us by our Creator to share with the world. And yes…it’s true…many people have some of the same talents and gifts as you do. No question about it. But the difference is that you were created as a unique individual. You don’t have the same makeup or architecture as others do. Therefore, how you use YOUR talent is uniquely different…amazingly and uniquely different than the next person. Your gifts and how you use them for God and for others were meant for a specific and divinely assigned purpose. Not sharing them with others who need them, is squandering them. I’m so serious! When you don’t share your gifts with the world, it’s as if you are preventing God from blessing others….literally!
And I know you may be wondering what your unique DNA is or how to share it. We’ve all asked ourselves the question, “what’s my purpose and how should I share it with others?” And even if you know what it is, sometimes it’s difficult to develop our talents and gifts because “life happens”. Bottom line? It’s up to us to do the work that reveals our purpose to us….to make right choices with that purpose…so that our gifts are protected and used for good. When that doesn’t happen, it grieves us (in more ways than one) and more importantly it grieves God. In the end, unfortunately, we end up cheating ourselves and not experiencing success. We end up living a life that’s mediocre and bland…but more importantly, we cheat others by not giving them an opportunity to succeed by utilizing the gifts we’ve been given to help them.
And so… what I’ve ALSO discovered…
There will always be something that gets in the way…something to distract our focus. That’s the enemy’s subtle way of completing his agenda.
And his agenda is to destroy us.
And since we know this, it should be easy to do something about it, right?
Not so easy…I know.
It isn’t easy because, we read the books, listen to the sermons, and attend the workshops…but then what? We’re usually motivated for a week…maybe two? Usually, once we’ve returned to our everyday environment and routine, we wait until the next “pep rally” comes along; we get fired up and start the cycle all over again.
Well…as of today, that doesn’t have to be true anymore!
