Girlfriend!! Entrepreneurship is HARD! It’s definitely not for everyone. Especially when you have to look within and start working on yourself. It’s almost like work, right? Personal development benefits can sometimes seem elusive but if you’re determined to make your vision a reality (like ME), then keep on reading!
I’ve been a corporate employee for a long time. I knew I was intelligent enough to run a business but I had all this fear surrounding how to get out there and make it do what it do. I discovered that the number one reason I was failing at it was because of a common misconception I had that it’s EASIER to work hard for yourself than it is for someone else.
Let me help you out, friend.
If you don’t change your mindset from employee to employer, (even if you’re only starting out with an employee of one…YOU), you won’t be successful. Fear will get in the way each and every time. Real talk!
So…how do you change your mindset?
Intentionally invest in your personal development. That means, invest with the intention of getting a return on your time and money. LOOK for and EXPECT the ROI. (Return on Investment)
Courses on marketing, web design, Facebook Ads, etc. are important but the money and time you invest in yourself will benefit you by helping you to stay the course, persevere and STAY ON YOUR GAME! It’ll help you to keep going when obstacles come your way. If you don’t build up that “PD Armor”, you’ll run back to the corporate world thinking that you’ve failed in the entrepreneurship game.
Now. Let me repeat what I said earlier. Entrepreneurship is not for everyone. There is no shame in building a career in corporate America. Hell…I built a blessed life around working as an accounting and IT professional. But if you are at a time and space in your life where your vision for independence is critical to your livelihood, then you have to get your mind right for it. Believing you can do it is the first step, and then training and preparing your mind for the world of entrepreneurship is key to staying in the game.
So…here are 5 benefits of personal development critical to the entrepreneur mindset and how they’re going to improve your life and your business:
Finding Out What Matters Most to You
I hear from my students all the time that they don’t know what their purpose is or that they are finding it hard to figure out what kind of business they should start. Personal development includes learning what matters most in your life. That’s where you need to start.
Personal development also helps you to remain aware of those core values that matter most so that they are at the forefront of your mind when you make decisions in your life and in your business. Being aware of what makes you “tick and boom” will also translate into what kind of customer’s you work well with and which ones you DON’T. (We can’t work with everyone out there!)
Discovering Your Strengths and Weaknesses
“Identify and maximize your strengths and minimize your weaknesses.” – Marcus Buckingham
For years I thought I was supposed to work hard on improving in areas I wasn’t good at in order to get promoted, get raises and to improve my overall value in the marketplace. WRONG! After taking an online workshop I found on Oprah’s website, I learned that my strengths deserved more of my time than my weaknesses did.
I am SO committed to sharing this revelation with others that I’ve included a link to it on my Resources page and I work through elements of it with all my private coaching clients. Finding your strengths means you can offer your best to your clients and customers. You’ll have a clear picture of what your genius work is so you can delegate the stuff you’re not so good at to others.
Developing your knowledge muscle by attending workshops, training sessions and reading books boosts your knowledge base as well as your intellect. Having more knowledge in that brain of yours makes you a more valuable resource to your business and to your clients. It also gives you a wealth of talking points for all those networking opportunities you’ll attend. You’ll gain perspective from others and you’ll gain credibility for those things you become an expert in. So always keep learning!
Consistently improving your mindset and skill set through personal development activities will increase your confidence…guaranteed! A common benefit of this will be your natural desire to want more. Your dreams and goals will be on the forefront of your mind and you will seek to find ways to move closer to accomplishing them, daily. You’ll be unstoppable all because you decided to work that PD muscle!
Connections with Other Personal Development Champions
Remember the phrase “it’s not what you know, it’s WHO you know”? Well…while I don’t discount having a strong knowledge muscle, I believe having solid relationships with others is equally if not more important. No woman is an island and you can’t be successful without the help of others.
Spending time with like-minded people will expose you to more opportunities. The more you know, the more you grow. And this applies not only to knowledge; but it also applies to people…especially if they know something you don’t. Feel me?
